watching the storm

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 2:41 pm

i’ve been watching the storm coverage on cable like it’s the war. i’ll avoid criticizing any reporters in case my blog is being monitored by their fan clubs, but do have to wonder: shouldn’t they shut up and help? one cameraman was out on a boat last night and was truly choked up by the devastation, but shouldn’t he toss his camera and help? why was he taking up space in a boat–his coverage might win him a prize? i’ve noticed, too, that the teams are stuck down there and wonder if the news agencies will have the nerve to fly them out. after all, they’re suffering. the situation in the wake of this storm is mind-boggling and anyone in the area should either help or get out of the way.

water

it seems we have a leak here at sonnystone. friday morning there was a deluge, 4 inches according to my rain gauge (but there may have been an inch or so in there before this particular monsoon). at any rate, i went about my day rather early and didn’t venture into the dining room until evening, thinking to have a think at my usual chair. there i discovered, to my dismay, that my chair was soaked with water. looking up (after a few confused moments looking for a spilled glass) i instantly surmised that it came from a rather damp area on the ceiling. pondering whether the spot looked like england or long island, i stood. within me was a sense of foreboding: major project, unplanned. husband put boy-child’s sled and another container in the attic area , did a general assessment of both the outside and inside cure for this malady, and we’re now braced for ktrna’s assault in a couple of days. in the meantime, i’m so-o-o looking forward to drywall dust. and who doesn’t love to replace roof decking? does that call for white or red wine?

the vegetable garden is no-more, and there’s been a lot of stress on the perennial flowers, but the sunflowers don’t seem to notice the drought. their cheery yellow spunk is very reassuring.

jubilee anniversary adventure

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 9:37 pm

husband and i took a quick trip to townsend, tn–”the quiet side of the smokies” to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. we did the motor-tour of cades cove so i could buy the appropriate dulcimer mountain music, then hiked back to laurel falls–an easy 2.5 mi. round-trip. we went into gatlingburg briefly to buy a replacement glass from the smokey mt. brewery, then headed back to townsend for a dip in the pool. we ate that evening at smokin’ joes–a real dump that could have been much more. before leaving the next morning we did a short quiet walk. though the get-away was short, it was a refreshing start of the next 25 years together.
