i’m up early to catch an opportunity to buy and plant, so i’ve actually checked out kt interviewing geo cloney re: the important issue of darfur–you know, a pressing issue, don’t you think? while here in the usa we discover that 11 men who died in an underground mine were issued faulty equipment, while soldiers sent to war die every day because of faulty or just not-good-enough equipment, at the same time millions of illegal immigrants decide to strike just to show us that they do all the work that us fat, lazy americans won’t do…..don’t get me started, but why don’t we just let the folks here illegally have full status if they join the military? hmmm……our border patrols can help them get back across the rio grande safely….

i drove around with my niece’s b-day card all day…it’s her 29th anniversary of birth today. i saw her saturday, but we didn’t manage to connect today—should have given her the card then, huh? allison is a wonderful person, too sweet to describe because it would sound like i was just saying nice things to make up for not getting the card to her on time. but she is really somebody i respect and admire. i was going through old pictures tonight and came across this picture taken a couple of years ago with her older son, ben (you remember my buddy ben, don’t you?) i assure you she hasn’t aged a bit. happy birthday, ali. love..
i have too many projects going on at the same time right now. between the house redecorating and the new garden planting, i’ve had no time to sit down at the computer and write. however, today’s your lucky day.
the work
we took 5 giant hostas and divided them into 20, moved the large hydrangea, moved some stuff called limelight, onandon. all of this digging meant real dirt all over my floors and thick dust coming in the windows—at least that’s my excuse for not cleaning it up. now i’m guilt-ridden as i avoid housecleaning a little bit longer by posting this useless information.
the play
my bro-in-law, winny, is retiring from teaching this year, so my sister gave him a surprise party that really was a surprise to him…really. it was fun and made me very nostalgic, saddened by the reality of aging, a little bummed at the sight i see when i look in the mirror. i’m seriously considering “having some work done”, but in the meantime i went to a place called head-to-toe body wraps and got 10 inches squeezed off with ace bandages. it was painless, interesting, effective, but next time i’ll have the more expensive one that will take off a full 20″—or 2x as much as the one i got (so they say). this whole idea of looking better without effort is becoming more and more seductive.
cuzn lana and i went to see “the complete works of shakespeare–abridged” and it was a real romp! it’s a 3-man comedy that brings to mind monty python or kids in the hall. it was done at the civic theatre and 2 of the boys are still seniors in h.s., the other is a student at usi. the gayest parts were probably a little underplayed due to the audience of grayhairs, but i really was entertained. sitting next to me was a “laugher”—i mean, this woman had a loud, shouting laugh that sometimes drowned out the lines. i could see the play over and over just to catch some of the funny even without the interference of the laugher, but it added to the zany atmosphere of the show. lana and i will be going to a real shakespeare play next week–taming of the shrew—but i doubt i’ll laugh as hard.
don’t forget that derby day is may 6–start picking your horses. i’ve got the mint, you bring the bourbon.

i spend a lot of time sitting on our back porch and it was inevitable that i began to rearrange the surrounding yard, first in my mind, then trying to communicate it to the husband so it can be made real. friday and saturday were two full days of hard work moving brick and stone, tilling and digging. we’ve gotten this far and will spend tomorrow moving hostas, mulching, finishing the path, on and on. i bought three rosebushes, a pink, a red, and a yellow. i placed my lavender between them. the daisies were divided and placed alongside the purple coneflower and are doing well. i replanted some very invasive stuff called limelight to an area where i can’t get anything else to grow and am hoping for the best. along with the hostas i’m moving my hydrangea and adding 2 more. it’s still too soon to plant the veggies—i sent myself a reminder last year–but it’s perfect for perennials.
what a holy week it has been–temperatures in the 80’s, blue skies with wispy clouds and abundant sunshine. i’ve been up to newburgh and bought some veggies and herbs. we’ve already dug and moved half of the side garden and we’re about ready to break ground on the new garden. i’ve got to stop and go up to church to work with the kids easter music program—we’re doing a breakfast jazz thing easter a.m. rummage sales are happening tomorrow and i play the organ for good friday service tonight. spring is springing.
during my hiatus from regular postings, i’ve done pretty much the same old stuff. you all know i went to nyc and held world’s cuddliest baby. you know i have been working on the plant sale at master gardeners. you didn’t know, but probably suspected, that husband painted the tv room. you might have guessed that work is still 3-4 fun-filled hours with hyper 5-year-olds and sullen 13-year-olds. spring is pretty unimpressive, so far, with the lows staying pretty low, but my tulips should bloom soon. at any rate, tomorrow is palm sunday, the beginning of holy week, and i only have to work 3 days. hope for nice weather to get some of the outside work done and move around some of these extra lbs i’ve put on this winter.

it’s been great to be with daughter and grandaughter…..i’ll be back soon.
