wink’s keeping an eye out for us

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 7:54 pm

this whole problem in the middle east has got wink on edge…he’s poring over his moshe dayan scrapbook and looking for a way to get into the action.  he’s doing very thorough patrols and has learned to really glare…it’s a look that could kill.  always the humanitarian, he made some signs to warn the critters……..

opening day

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 7:13 pm

okay, it’s not a good picture, but i think it portrays the kind of haze there is when the heat index is 114.  i’ve actually been at ellis on hotter days (remember the year when i  bought the box in the sun?), but somehow i couldn’t get into the picture-taking.  maybe because i’m feeling a loss…or lost.  the new tote board has a giant tv screen so you can watch the race from the other side.  this is cool in many ways, but i found myself distracted by the screen and not able to focus when the horses finished…..i started out strong with two winners in the first race, but ended up spending my whole allowance by the 5th race and came home.  lana & charley were there—- she was ON and he was beginning to get a charge when i left.  there was a good crowd and i’m glad but looking forward to going back tomorrow when all the amateurs have moved on and i can focus.

out on a limb

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 3:41 pm

we had a lot of thunderstorms last week with 4.5 inches of rain, but it was clear and quiet night before last as we lay dozing on the couch.  we both woke to a sound that seemed to shake the house and went looking for the source.  wielding a flashlight we discovered a limb had fallen from our oldest tree, nicely skirting the driveway.  if i were to ask my master gardener guru, who is one of 3 certified arborists in the area, what to do about that tree (even before this loss) he would say cut it down–so i don’t ask him.  i’m getting sick of falling tree-limbs and/or trees–really sick.  this tree is dying, no doubt, as it has had its roots covered with blacktop and is way too close to the house, but i don’t want to actually save the tree as much as i just want to keep it as long as i can.  husband is going to call the bigtimber guys–the ones who took care of the storm damage next door and gave us the woodchips–for advice and to prune it.  it is covered with poison oak also, so it’s kind of a pain to deal with, and of course we need a cherry-picker.   i feel like i’m just waiting for the next limb to drop……

summertime and the livin’ is soggy

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 10:43 pm

my time with my kids seemed to go by very quickly and i’ve felt a little let-down that has been compounded by my frustration with vacation bible school.  so i haven’t written because, hey do you really want to read my gripes about vbs?  tomorrow is the last day and i’ve made it through without incident, so i’ll just stay away from the subject.

we’re considering building an ark, but my garden is loving it.  i’ve harvested several zucchini and cherry tomatoes, some sweet banana peppers and yellow squash.  the big tomatoes are coming on and will be ready in a couple of weeks.

oh, for those of you who missed the party, final count was 85 people of all ages–5 mos. to 80 yrs.  there was a great deal of love being passed around along with the bbq and i’ve had several thank-you notes as well as personal testimonies of the “blast” folks had.  everything went great, but i didn’t take any pictures and eric’s are all portraits, so you’ll have to use your imagination.

coming up:

first day of the races 7/19–giveaway this year is a cd/dvd.  while i’d rather have a hat or a t-shirt, i hear the dvd is some before- and-after of the damage done on 11/6.  i also heard they’ve installed a new mega tv screen and are using tents over near the paddock that got blown away.  i’ll for sure take pix.

willie nelson & family at mesker amphitheatre—hope they’ll let us in this time because i don’t have tickets.

p.s.  in my lethargy, i actually watched “finding neverland” last night—i can’t believe i watched something so sad, but thank the lord for tivo so i can fast-forward through those parts.  i surprised myself that i would sit still for such drama, but it goes to show what i’ll do just to look at j.depp all cleaned up and pretty.
