10-20-30

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 5:59 pm

i just read a blog that had been tagged with a 10-20-30 meme: since it’s halloween you should be able to remember what was going on with yourself 10, 20, and 30 years ago.

10 years ago melissa moved to nyc.  husband and son-in-law-to-be moved her stuff in the van and i stayed home and moped.  probably drank, if i know me.  eric was paralyzed on one side for months after the return trip.  (where was bennie hinn when we needed him?)

20 years ago does not stand out to me because i didn’t take the kids out trick-or-treating—that was casey’s thing.  he really should have been a costume artist.  mel would have been 12, mick 6..hmm…pirate and witch?  i don’t know.  i know i had just played my first Reformation Sunday Service at the lutheran church–and that was a big deal then.

30 years ago, melissa would have been 2-almost-3 and i remember taking her door-to-door in some eastside neighborhoods with my buddies vince & fred.  i can’t, though, remember if that was the year she was “underdog” because i can’t remember her being anything other than “underdog”.   forgive me, honey, did i make you wear the same outfit every year?  we were so poor.  later on i took her over to grandma joann, who took a whole passel of kids out till way after dark.  by the time i picked her up, she’d been robbed by most of the bigger kids but was quite happy with her haul.

how about you?

what’s that cold, wet falling from the sky?

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 7:43 pm

well, we finally got rain.  and cold.  the fireplace in the library is warming and cozy flanked by my new rocking chairs.  the blankies are out in the tv room and we’ve taken to our winter schedule: work, nap, eat, sleep, work, nap, eat, sleep to infinity.  i feel like a contented cat.

i went to a genealogy seminar last week-end and it was very informative.  i learned more about newspaper research and a lot about understanding the formats of the various census(es).  i bought a couple of books, of course, and am ready to spend a couple of winter afternoons at willard using their ancestry dot com for free.

since i couldn’t quite believe that it would ever get cold or wet, i still have to bring in various pots of herbs and my green and lima beans are still on the vines.  they’re okay, though, and since husband will be camping with the scouts this week-end i’ll make harvesting part of my retreat.

it was my buddy ben’s b-day last saturday and i took his present over to him today:  a hand-held spongebob game.  i didn’t have batteries for it, but it was still a big hit and he colored me up a couple of spongebob pages before i left.  i meant to take pictures, but am so spacey.

i’d like to have a bonfire sometime in the next month or so–  last week-end (the weather was picture-perfect) we tailgated down by the firepit and had foil dinners and marshmallows.   it would be so fun with all my g-nieces & nephews, so let’s get out our calendars and get together.  (& get down–get it?)

i’m counting the days till i visit with em (16) and they’re flying.

oh, when i went to M/M oglesby’s booth at their church rummage sale i bought a box of old sheet music for $2.  it is the cooolest, original, large, colorful, i can’t believe so cool bunch of music–a lot from WWI era and on up to some 30’s and 40’s.   also bought a nut-buster –damn, i just ruined somebody’s christmas surprise….but we don’t know whose…..

whoo, i lost my computer….first the keyboard, then after changing out the dead keyboard with another,  the whole thing went bye-bye.  thank the Lord it was my stupidity—i hooked it up a little wrong, sorry.  at any rate, here i am.

my best friend in the world who’s not related to me—let’s call her luann–has been in town helping her mom and dad clean out the family home so the parents can move into a small apartment.  i can only wish my folks had lived to be in their 80’s, but this part i’m glad i missed.  lu lives in portland, ore; her brother and family are settled nicely in ky, so the house that has been in the family for generations is going on the market.  i really, really, really wish someone i love would buy the house–and they do, too.  i also scarfed up two old rocking chairs, a bookcase, and a small child-size dining table (or that’s what i’m calling it).  these things are still in the living room

because we spent the week-end planting over at the church.  it went well, looks good–glad it’s done.

i’ve had a few problems at work, but those are taken care of too.  somehow i feel like the computer is my iron lung.  feeling better now that it’s working.

pimples

Filed under: Uncategorized — TheBug @ 3:01 pm

my school is on the west side and the students are therefore involved in the westside fall festival “king and queen” contest - as well as the tug ‘o war.  i got the heights and weights done early to do my part in bringing home a victory in the tug - way back in august, as a matter of fact.

the young lady who is nominated for queen is a regular medicine-receiver of mine (not what you think–she’s lactose intolerant).  she has stood out to me ever since i met her because she is so pretty (looks and acts like jackie on that 70’s show) and because she is rather, oh, vain.  example of early conversation: feel my hair, isn’t it so soft?  yesterday she appeared rather frantic about some pimples on her nose and chin and i told her i’d bring in some benzoil peroxide stuff i’ve got.  i forgot to bring it in, but when she showed her nose looked a lot better.  however, the chin was in bad shape with an “under the skinner” that she was trying to pop.  we all took a turn, using q-tips so we didn’t infect.  to no avail.

i don’t really know how they choose the winners, but my vote is for her - pimple and all.  p.s. the potential king came by yesterday to get some ice for his swollen eye.  he had a pimple or two to match…..

ADDENDUM:  my little gal and her fella won!!!   yay!
